Chapter Nine

Zane refused to leave Bailey’s side. As she explained her phone call to Sheriff Joseph Morgan, he stationed himself to her right, and tried to ignore how Shyler remained plastered to her left.

Emily and Reece still scouted out the area, disappearing every few seconds as they checked each shadowed nook behind the garbage dumpster and behind a telephone pole. They held their fancy guns in both hands as they snooped around.

He rolled his eyes. Jesus. How could it be possible that everyone had a freaking gun but him? Talk about humiliating. Though the sheriff wore street clothes, he’d even strapped one to his waist. At least Shy and Bailey had put their pea shooters away, making him look marginally less idiotic.

“…then he said he was going to leave me a present,” Bailey reported, reaching out blindly and finding Zane’s fingers. He squeezed tight a moment before he noticed she’d reached for Shy with her other hand.

Morgan glanced up sharply and stopped taking notes. “What kind of present?”

She shook her head and looked scared shitless when she whispered, “I don’t know.”

Zane tightened his grip not even caring if his cousin did the same thing on the other side of her.

Actually, he hoped the bozo was giving her all the support she needed. He could put aside his comfort level over this threesome business to keep Bailey well and truly protected. And she needed both their support at the moment. He could swallow down his pride and share…her hand. But that was all, goddamn it.

Mouth tightening into a grim line, Morgan didn’t reply. Zane wanted to know what he was thinking. What kind of gift did he assume the Snatcher was going to give Bailey?

Thank God Shyler was around—not that Zane would ever admit that aloud. But at least his loudmouth cousin frowned and demanded, “So what kind of gift do you think he’s going to leave her? A gold necklace or a dead body?”

“Oh God,” Bailey uttered, squeezing down tight on Zane. “Don’t say that.”

Zane swallowed. No one was leaving her alone, not for as long as she stayed in Miners Bend. She’d caught the interest of the Snatcher. There might as well be a big ol’ bull’s eye painted on the center of her forehead.

“Dear God, who is that?” Bailey gasped beside him, sounding too winded for his comfort as she nearly jumped into his arms.

Zane glanced over in time to catch his sister’s boyfriend stroll toward them, the shadows parting around him as if opening a foggy curtain to let him through. Even the night feared to get too close to such a dangerous apparition.

He checked Bailey’s expression to notice she was definitely interested in what she saw, which only made his hackles soar with irritation. He knew damn good and well women thought Court Lawson was attractive in an excitingly dark and mysterious sort of way. He’d overheard his female cousins gossiping with his sister over Lawson’s looks. And Zane most definitely did not want Bailey to get caught up in what they’d called his arousing aura.
